Tesla Model 3/Y part interchange — supersessions, cores and multiple numbers
One Tesla component family can appear under several complete references. That does not mean every number is interchangeable, and it does not always mean the physical part changed in an obvious way. A later revision may supersede an earlier reference. A remanufacturing route may add a Core suffix. A service assembly may include different content. A middle-code change may move the reference from a complete assembly to a bracket or finish variant. GNSGO's own index contains 133 base-number groups with more than one version. For a European workshop, the safe purchasing rule is to provide the complete old number and VIN, then ask whether the offered reference is a recorded replacement. “It has the same base” is useful evidence, not an interchange decision.
1. Four relationships buyers often confuse
The word “interchange” is used too loosely. These are different relationships:
| Relationship | What it means in procurement | Safe assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Revision family | Several complete references share a base | Related, but not necessarily interchangeable |
| Supersession | A later saleable reference replaces an earlier one | Follow the recorded direction and VIN application |
| Core / exchange route | A separate reference identifies a returnable or remanufacturing-linked unit | Confirm deposit, return and condition terms |
| Left/right pair | Mirrored references serve opposite sides | Never substitute one side for the other |
A fifth case is a change in supplied scope. A base family can include both an assembly and its bracket, or a service panel and a more complete production-style assembly. Those items are related in catalogue logic but are not substitutes for each other.
2. Same base, four versions: the 1077371 example
GNSGO's data contains 133 groups in which one base appears with several full references. The 1077371 family is a useful example: 1077371-00-J, 1077371-00-K, 1077371-00-L and 1077371-10-B.
The -00- J, K and L records belong to a left-hand headlamp assembly family. The -10-B record is described as a left-hand headlight bracket for Model 3 (2017–2023). The same base therefore links at least two kinds of difference: revision letters within the 00 assembly route, and a middle-code change associated with a different supplied scope.
This prevents two common mistakes. First, a later letter cannot be treated as an automatic replacement merely because it follows alphabetically. A recorded supersession and VIN application are still needed. Second, 1077371-10-B cannot be substituted for a complete headlamp simply because the first seven digits match. It is a bracket record.
The base number helps the supplier find the family. The complete number identifies what the buyer is actually asking for.
3. Same base and letter, different middle code
The 1027011 family makes the middle code visible without a revision change. 1027011-00-A is a medium chrome lug-nut cap for Model 3 (2017–2023). 1027011-01-A is recorded as a black medium protruding cover for Model 3 (2017–2023) and Model S. 1027011-02-A is a shiny black wheel hub nut cover for the same recorded model combination.
They may occupy the same general area and share the same base and A ending, but finish and form differ. This is not a supersession chain established by the number alone. It is a set of separate references in one family.
For procurement, “any 1027011 cap” is not precise enough. The workshop should provide the old complete reference or state the required finish and form, while still supplying the VIN. Small trim parts create returns just as effectively as expensive assemblies when the suffix is ignored.
4. What supersession actually means
A supersession is directional catalogue information: an old reference is replaced by a newer saleable reference for a defined application. It may arise from a controlled revision, supplier change, consolidation of stock or change in how the item is supplied. The physical differences may be obvious, minor or invisible in a photograph.
The important word is recorded. Sharing a base number is not proof of supersession. Alphabetical order is not proof. A marketplace seller listing both numbers in one title is not proof. GNSGO checks whether the sourcing record supports the replacement and whether the vehicle application agrees with the VIN.
Even when new replaces old, the reverse may not be safe. Later vehicles can depend on the later configuration. A superseding number may cover earlier vehicles while the older stock does not cover later ones. Buyers should therefore ask, “Does this offered reference supersede my complete old number for this VIN?” rather than “Is this basically the same part?”
Where no defensible relationship is available, GNSGO does not publish a guessed substitution.
5. Core references are commercial identities as well as part identities
The front-left damper family provides the clearest Core evidence in our index. 1044090-00-A is recorded as a front-left coil damper assembly for a rear-wheel-drive Model 3 (2017–2023). 1044090-00-AX is recorded as a front-left hydraulic two-wheel-drive shock absorber Core, with Model 3 (2017–2023) and Model Y (2020–2024) in its fit field.
The AX reference is not a typographical extension that can be dropped. In this observed pair, it identifies a Core record. A core normally has value within a remanufacturing or exchange supply route. The quotation may therefore include conditions for return eligibility, deposit, unit condition and transport. Those conditions are commercial facts that must be agreed for that enquiry.
A Core reference also should not be read as automatic proof that the A and AX records have identical application text. Here they do not. The VIN and purchasing requirement decide whether the buyer needs a new unit, a remanufactured unit, a core-linked supply option or another reference. Remanufactured units can be quoted on request by part number; availability is confirmed order by order.
6. Left and right are hard limits, not soft descriptions
GNSGO's index contains 287 records whose names include “Left Hand.” That volume shows that handedness is a catalogue rule across many categories, not an occasional wording preference.
For example, 1044321-00-J is a left-front upper control arm assembly recorded for Model 3 (2017–2023) and Model Y (2020–2024). 1044326-00-J is the corresponding right-front upper control arm assembly for the same recorded applications. Similar names and matching suffixes do not make the parts interchangeable; the base numbers and sides differ.
The same discipline applies to lamps, brackets, liners, seals, regulators, panels and steering-related items. “Either side” is valid only where the specific record says the component is common. A photograph flipped by a phone or marketplace listing is not evidence of side.
State side in words and provide the complete old reference. This avoids disputes caused by viewing the vehicle from different directions or using ambiguous abbreviations.
7. Why one physical item may carry more than one reference
A workshop may encounter one number on the removed part, another in a current sourcing record and a third in a remanufacturing quotation. Several mechanisms can explain this without making the records contradictory:
- the old number has been superseded in one direction;
- a later hardware revision has its own complete reference;
- the service item includes different content from the production assembly;
- a bracket or subcomponent shares the family base;
- finish or market configuration changes the middle code;
- a Core or remanufactured route has a distinct commercial reference.
The physical unit may appear unchanged from the visible side, but the ordering identity can still differ. Conversely, references sharing a base may describe visibly and commercially different items. That is why interchange must be established from the relationship between records, not from the number of matching digits.
8. A better way to request a quote
Do not ask only for “a Model Y headlamp,” “the front arm” or “the same generator-looking unit.” Send the VIN, complete old OE number, old label image, whole-part photos, side, position and required supplied form. If you already have a candidate replacement number, include it separately and ask GNSGO to confirm the relationship.
The answer may be: exact number confirmed; a recorded superseding number confirmed; core/remanufactured route quoted on request; application needs more evidence; or the reference still being checked. Send us the part number or a photo of the label, and we will check whether we can source it. Availability is confirmed on the quotation. An indexed reference is not a promise that a supply route exists, and a supply route for one family member is not permission to substitute it.
For fleets, keep both the removed reference and the supplied replacement in the vehicle record. Over time, that creates an auditable history instead of a list of generic part names.
Short answers
Does the same base number mean two parts interchange?
No. It means the records are related. The 1077371 family includes both headlamp-assembly revisions and a bracket reference.
Is the highest revision letter always the correct one?
No. A later letter may be a later revision, but VIN application and recorded supersession determine whether it replaces the old number.
Can an old superseded part replace the new number?
Do not assume so. Supersession can be one-directional: the new reference may serve the old application while the reverse is not established.
What does -AX mean in the damper example?
In GNSGO's 1044090 pair, the AX record is explicitly named as a Core. Return, deposit, condition and application terms are confirmed with the quotation. Remanufactured units can be quoted on request by part number; availability is confirmed order by order.
Can left and right parts be substituted?
No, unless the specific record explicitly states common use. Separate left- and right-hand references should be treated as hard application limits.
What should a workshop send when asking about interchange?
Send the VIN, complete old number, old label, side and candidate new number. Ask whether the candidate is a recorded replacement for that VIN, not merely whether it looks similar.
Where this comes from.
The references and counts quoted above are taken from GNSGO's own parts index for China-built and China-sourced Tesla parts — the same list at Tesla compatible parts — OE reference index. Availability, supersession and application are confirmed per enquiry against the complete OE number and VIN. A shared base is described here as evidence of a family, not as a formal interchange rule. We have not drawn on Tesla's copyrighted workshop documentation for this page, and we do not reproduce any manual pages. Where a replacement relationship is not established in our data, we say so rather than infer it from appearance or number order.
