MG Sells More Cars in Europe Than in China

MG sells more cars in Europe than in China. That’s not a weakness. It’s the business model. In 2024, the brand sold over 700,000 vehicles globally — but fewer than 75,000 of those were in China. Less than 11%. While MG was becoming one of Europe’s fastest-growing EV brands, its domestic presence was shrinking.

Last year, MG sold 307,000 vehicles in Europe — up 26% year-on-year, placing it 16th among all brands and the only Chinese nameplate in the Top 20. The brand now operates over 1,300 dealerships across 34 European markets.

The MG4’s R&D costs, tooling investment, and platform development were substantially covered by global sales revenue before the domestic price cut ever happened. The Chinese pricing doesn’t need to recover those fixed costs. It only needs to clear marginal cost plus a thin contribution margin.

It’s global cost amortization — and it’s a playbook that only works if you have a profitable overseas business funding aggressive domestic market share acquisition.

Earlier this month, SAIC confirmed MG’s European manufacturing plant will be located in Galicia, Spain — not Hungary, which had been widely expected to win the bid. Investment: €200 million. Capacity: 120,000 units annually. Production start: 2028.

Spain was MG’s fourth-largest European market last year, with 45,000 units sold — up 46%. Since 2021, MG has delivered over 130,000 vehicles there. Most Chinese EV startups expanding into Europe are doing so from a position of domestic strength — they win at home, then export.

MG inverted that model: it built a profitable European business first, then used that cash flow to fund a domestic comeback.

For European sourcing directors and competitive analysts: when you see a Chinese brand price aggressively, the first question should not be “how are they losing money on this.” It should be “where is the margin coming from to fund this.”In MG’s case, the answer is clear. It’s coming from Europe.
