Three Chinese Auto Groups Hold World Top-10 Seats
Three Chinese auto groups hold seats in the world’s top 10 by global market share — BYD (6th, 4.8%), Geely (7th, 4.6%) and Chery (9th, tied with Ford, 4.1%) — together accounting for 13.5% of everything sold globally in the first half of 2026. Three were on the 2025 list as well (BYD, SAIC and Geely). That is the more interesting part: the count stayed the same, the names changed. Chery moved in; SAIC is not in this one.
BYD’s own numbers show what is holding that seat up. Its H1 2026 NEV sales were about 1.81 million units, down 15.7% year on year — and the decline was concentrated at home. Its overseas sales reached 789,400 units, roughly 44% of everything it sold, up about 70% year on year.
The ranking held because the export business grew fast enough to cover a domestic slowdown. Not because the home market did.
When did you last read a Chinese brand’s “world ranking” as a signal?
