China's Auto Exports Surged in H1 2026
China’s auto exports surged 65% in H1 2026. In five months, 542 new models launched — 3.6 per day, exports reached 5.1 million units — a 65% jump. Over a third of production now goes abroad. New energy vehicles accounted for 46% of exports.
Chinese automakers are exporting because the domestic market, while still the world’s largest, is no longer growing fast enough to sustain everyone in it. ACEA reported 7.23 million passenger vehicle registrations in Europe in H1 2026, up 6.1%. EV sales grew 35%. Petrol and diesel declined sharply.
Five Chinese groups — Geely (225,300), SAIC (180,000), BYD (174,100, +145.5%), Chery (155,800, +305.8%), and Leapmotor (56,005, +558.3%) — collectively sold 792,000 vehicles, capturing 11% of the European market. In May, these five outsold six Japanese brands combined for the first time.
In June, Chinese PHEVs captured 34% of Europe’s plug-in hybrid segment. One in three PHEVs sold in Europe now carries a Chinese badge. Geely invested €221 million for 34% of Ford’s Valencia plant. BYD’s Hungarian factory begins production this year. Chery acquired Nissan’s former Barcelona facility.
SAIC’s MG committed €200 million to a Galicia plant. XPeng is in talks with Volkswagen on factory sharing. The vehicle parc is growing faster than the service infrastructure to support it. 792,000 Chinese-brand vehicles sold in Europe in six months. Each one generates a decade of parts, service, and warranty demand.
The aftermarket ecosystem to support these vehicles is being built — or not built — right now. : CAAM, ACEA, CPCA, Automobility, Dataforce, company filings.
